F-22 or Veto

The other night the House Rules Committee denied Barney Frank's amendment to strip out unnecessary F-22s from the Defense Authorization bill. We were really angry when we got the news, and we weren't the only ones: President Obama has announced that he might veto the entire authorization bill if the planes aren't taken out.

But there's another chance for our leaders to do the right thing - the Senate is taking up their version of the bill right now, and if they leave the planes out, we can avoid an ugly confrontation.

Email your Senator right now and demand that they keep these wasteful warplanes out of the bill - so the President doesn't have to.

We Need Federal Health Care Reform Now!

Insurance companies and their lackeys in Congress claim that if we let Americans choose a public health insurance option, it will cut into their profits. After years of building an American health care system that's like a house on fire, their only strategy is to block the exits when help is near.

The good news is, they might be right. States across the country are already using public plans to drive down costs and expand access to healthcare2. Now, a movement of legislators from these states is mobilizing to tell Congress it's time to unify these local efforts into a national public option.

Ask your state legislators to endorse a public option, and demand health care for all NOW!

Keep Obama's Military Budgets Clean!

The full Pentagon budget hasn't even been drafted yet. But some members of Congress are already trying to slip billions of dollars of pork-barrel weapons projects - including C-17 transport planes the air force doesn't want - into the supplemental budget request for Iraq and Afghanistan.

We kept the extra spending out of the Senate version of the bill, but there's one more vote before Obama can sign off and we need Congress to keep this supplemental clear of pork-barrel spending. Help change America's priorities for good:

Tell Congress to pass the President's Supplemental, and hold the pork.

Don't let insurance companies dictate reform!

The industry knows the same thing we do, and they don't like it: the only way to make reform work for patients and payers is to allow the option of a public insurance plan. Obama has committed to that in the past, but insurance companies are trying to talk him out of his pledge with these promises to cut some unspecified costs, some years in the future. We need to have OUR say about that.

While we couldn't get into that room with the health industry lobbyists, we DO have access to the most widely-read public forum: the local newspaper.

Write a letter to your local paper that reminds Congress and the President that health care reform needs to work for us, and demand a public option.

No Blockade of Iran

What would a blockade of Iran look like? The Bush administration sending American warships and military equipment into the most combustible region in the world. Their mission? Board and inspect cargo entering and leaving Iran by any means necessary. This would be a clear provocation and the first step on the path to all out war.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what Democrats who want to look tough on national security are demanding. Right now there is a resolution working its way through the House of Representatives which would require a naval blockade of Iran and bring us closer to war. This resolution already has 247 co-sponsors and it must be stopped.

Tell your Representative to oppose the Ackerman Iran resolution

Remember January 2001? Those were the good old days before George Bush and Dick Cheney took office. At the time, gas cost just a dollar fifty-one a gallon. And now? $3? $3.50? Even four dollars for a gallon of gas.

The cost of driving to work and flying to visit family keeps going up. Meanwhile, Exxon-Mobil made more profits last year than any corporation in human history.

It's long past time for real energy independence in America and that starts by making sure oil companies pay their fair share.

Send a message to your Senator right now.

There is a crisis in Florida

There is a human rights crisis in Florida's fields. Farm laborers are being paid poverty wages while working long hours without overtime pay. There is even physical abuse and wage fraud by crew leaders, supervisors, and growers.

There is a simple solution. Workers have asked Burger King to pay just one penny more per pound for tomatoes and ensure that the increase is passed on to tomato pickers in the form of increased wages. While other fast food corporations have already agreed to this small change, Burger King has so far refused to help workers out of poverty.

Sign the petition today and stand up for workers.

Co-Sponsor the Responsible Plan

Gen. Petraeus has asked for a "45-day period for consolidation and evaluation to examine the situation on the ground". But we've heard this before. This is really just a request for endless war, forty-five days a time. After five years of an unnecessary war, we're tired of hearing the same rosy projections and shaded facts. We're fed up with the lies and want to bring our troops home.

A group of Congressional candidates have come up with a Responsible Plan to get our nation out of this nightmare, and scores of them have already agreed that if elected they will actually carry out the plan, not just keep holding hearings while continuing the war.

Sign on to the Responsible Plan Today.

Stand with Tibet

You've probably heard about the violence in Tibet. After decades of oppressive rule, the people of Tibet have taken to the streets to air their grievances. Violence is escalating, but the Dalai Lama has offered to meet directly with Chinese leaders to resolve the current crisis.

We urgently need to call on the Chinese government to live up to its obligations by resolving the situation peacefully and open up a direct dialogue with the Dalai Lama. Sign our petition to the Chinese President and make sure he renounces force in resolving the crisis:
